Li Shang

Making for a  Theatre Production of Mulan

Following a previous design project; designing for a Theatre Production of Disney's 'Mulan', I brought forward one of the final designs of the project to delve into construction methods and processes in order to create an oriental, military design for the character of Li Shang. The design targeted different processes and techniques in which I was able to take the opportunity to collaborate with members of industry to strengthen my existing knowledge of construction and surface design.

Beginning construction of the design, I drafted unique patterns for each of the garments including the martial arts training garments and the oriental celebratory dress garments. The armour elements initiated investigation into leatherwork with the guidance of a leather craft specialist for TV and film. Another specialist skill encouraged through he production of the costume design included gold work embroidery, creating the intricate "Mandarin" ranking square at the centre of the costume.

The original designs for this piece can be seen as part of the "Mulan" page linked below.
